Pregnancy Care & Treatment

Holding Tummy

Pregnancy is a magical, special time in a woman’s life. The anticipation of baby’s arrival, however, is met with some side effects and aches and pains. Chiropractic care is beneficial for both the pregnancy months as well as childbirth position. Having experienced five very different births herself, Dr. Graham can share with you why chiropractic care can make all the difference for a more comfortable pregnancy and faster, easier birth!

Pregnant women seek out Chiropractic care for help with:

  • Relieving back, neck and joint pain

  • Maintaining a healthier pregnancy for mother and baby

  • Reducing labor and delivery time

  • Increasing ease of delivery, requiring fewer interventions

  • Balancing pelvis for a more optimal position for baby

By assessing the alignment of her pelvis, a chiropractor can make certain that the baby has the opportunity to move into the ideal birthing position. A chiropractor will also check the mother’s nervous system, ensuring that the communication channels that govern uterine function are open and clear. This too promotes a more straightforward labour.

Women who discover that their baby is in a breech or transverse position can use The Webster Technique to assist with releasing the intra-uterine constraint, whereby the baby is forced to hold an awkward position in the pelvis. Breech and transverse positions may occur due to a number of reasons, and chiropractors work to re-balance pelvic muscles, ligaments and joint alignment, encouraging babies to move down into the birth canal. Chiropractic care throughout pregnancy can relieve and even prevent the common discomforts experienced. Specific adjustments eliminate these stresses in your spine, restore balance to your pelvis and result in greater comfort and lifestyle improvements.

More and more pregnant women are seeking chiropractic adjustments throughout their pregnancy in order to strengthen their health and help their bodies prepare for labour and any challenges that may arise, post birth. Post-partum chiropractic care helps in the recovery process from birth which is very traumatic on mom’s pelvic bones and muscles.

Custom-Fit Orthotics & Orthotic Therapy

shutterstock_1905905059 (1).jpg

Your feet have direct impact on the rest of your body and support you with each step. Orthotics and proper shoe fit are very important aspects of foot health. If the arches in one or both of your feet collapse (‘flat feet’), your body isn’t getting correct postural support. Orthotics work with your adjustments to help keep your body in proper alignment.

The foot bone is connected to the leg bone, the leg bone is connected to the hip bone, and the hip bone is connected to your back bone (spine), and even if your feet don’t hurt, the fact that your foundation has been weakened can have a seriouimpact to the rest of your body.

Most people suffer from pronation (loss of natural arch), which is caused by gravity, weight, sedentary living and the concrete we often walk on in modern life. This causes ligaments under the foot to become unstructured and loose and the muscles become weak. The lower an arch falls the less likely it is that they can be restored naturally. Feet with too much pronation become very sore and often deformed. Additionally, an improper arch or an unlevel pelvis can lead to hip, knee and low back pain. If you are currently having knee, hip, low back or neck pain, the reason may be because your feet are not supporting your joints, bones, or soft tissues above the ankle properly. This lack of support can lead to stress and pain in other parts of your body.

Our orthotics are custom made to your feet. A foam cast is used to make the impression of your foot. The cast is then sent to a specialized laboratory to fabricate the orthotic. The orthotics are made from a soft or semi-rigid plastic material to better address your specific needs.

Dr. Graham has the expertise to evaluate your feet and determine if custom orthotics are right for you!

Pediatric Chiropractic Care

Happy Baby

Often, the first subluxation occurs during the birth process. Even during a normal, natural birth, an enormous amount of pressure is put on the infant’s head and spine. Added interventions, such as pulling, twisting, forceps, and suction, all cause further stress on the baby’s delicate spine, and often result in baby’s first misalignments. There are six crucial times in a baby’s first year when spinal examinations are especially important:

  • After the birth process

  • When the baby starts to hold his/her head up

  • When the baby sits up

  • When the baby starts to crawl

  • When the baby starts to stand

  • When the baby starts to walk

The old proverb of “As the twig is bent so grows the tree” often applies to our children. Small spinal problems as a child can turn into larger issues later in life. Our children are much more sedentary today than they used to be, using more computers, and often lack proper muscle tone to effectively support their spine. These means that children of all ages can suffer from health and wellness issues stemming from the spine and neck. Fortunately, children can also benefit from chiropractic care. Infant spinal care can be very similar to the pressure one uses to test the ripeness of fruit and the care performed by trained practitioner is perfectly safe.

Bumps and bruises are common for kids.  And while it’s easy to tell if your kid has had a major injury, it’s much harder, if not impossible, to tell when a child has micro trauma. Micro trauma could be the result of repetitive poor posture, tripping or falling, or some other accident. Unfortunately, over time these micro traumas can lead to subluxations, which increase the chances of spinal or long-term health issues. When it comes to treating misalignments or subluxations, chiropractors are experts in locating subluxations, or misalignments, and correcting them.

A mother of 5, Dr. Graham has seen firsthand the wonders that chiropractic care can do for babies and children. Not only does she see many children regularly at the clinic (injury and/or wellness care), but she also treats her own 5 children as they grow and develop.  She has seen the positive impact that chiropractic care can have on families as a whole. Having children can be stressful enough, but having a child with health issues is even more stressful. So if you live in the West Carleton or Kanata area, give us a call today and schedule an initial visit!  We'd love to help!
